Why Your Chickens Need Fiber (And 6 Easy Ways to Add It to Their Diet)

Published on 4 April 2025 at 08:16

If you’ve ever watched your chickens act like tiny feathered vacuum cleaners, you’re not alone. Mine are constantly on the hunt for snacks—which got me wondering if their food obsession had anything to do with their diet. According to my research, it’s actually pretty common, and one thing that might help? Fiber.

Just like in our diets, fiber helps chickens feel full, supports healthy digestion, and can even reduce those frantic feeding behaviors. Here are some easy, chicken-approved ways to boost the fiber in their diet:

🌾 1. Oats (rolled or whole)

Oats are a gentle source of fiber and can help calm the digestive system. I like to mix in a small amount with their regular feed or offer it as a treat. Just don’t overdo it—too much can lower their overall protein intake.

🥬 2. Leafy greens

Think kale, lettuce, collards, and cabbage. Not only do they add roughage, but they also give your flock something fun to peck at, keeping boredom (and feather picking) at bay.

🍠 3. Pumpkin or sweet potato (cooked)

These are fiber-rich and packed with natural sweetness. Bonus: pumpkin seeds may help reduce internal parasites—win-win!

🌻 4. Black Oil Sunflower Seeds (BOSS)

Great in moderation, especially during colder months. They’re high in fiber and fat, making them a satisfying snack for your flock.

🌱 5. Alfalfa pellets or hay

If you’ve got extra hay or access to alfalfa pellets, chickens will peck at it and get some much-needed roughage. Just make sure they have grit to help digest the fibrous material.

🧄 6. Vegetable scraps

Things like carrot tops, beet greens, and broccoli stems are perfect. Avoid anything moldy or toxic—no onions, avocados, or green potatoes.
